Shoppers' disappointment as Clarks to close

LLANELLI has seen many shops come and go over the years, and until now Clarks has stood firm.

But after 41 years the store on the corner of Stepney Street will close its doors for the last time on Saturday, October 5.

A head office spokesman said the lease had expired and will not be renewed.

Customers from all generations are devastated at the news.

Rhian Jones, 22 from Gower View says: “It’s such a shame. Clarks is one of the better shops in town and I think the town will suffer.

“I can remember going there for my first pair of school shoes and how excited I was.

“It’s in a brilliant location and it’s sad to think another pound shop will probably replace it.”

While the Trostre store will remain open, many shoppers — especially the elderly — said that was too difficult to get to.

Annie Mcdonald, 75, of Burry Port, said: “Not everyone likes Trostre. And they seem to be doing well, so it wouldn’t matter as much if they closed a few shops.

“Round here it really does matter. Everything’s gone. Ninety per cent of Stepney Street is just charity shops.”

Mrs Mcdonald added that she and her husband James, 76, only buy their shoes from Clarks.

She praised the quality of the goods, and added: “The staff are always very sociable, friendly and helpful.”

The closure is another blow to the town, which once housed popular stores such as Marks Spencer, WH Smith, Topshop and Woolworth’s.

Mrs Thomas, of Bynea, said: “It’s very sad, this nice little town will be gone before long.

“They shouldn’t have taken Marks Spencer — that’s when Llanelli started to go downhill.”

Staff, who could not comment while they are still employed by Clarks, are said to be devastated by the news, with many having served at the store for many years.

While the seven employees have been told some will be staying with the company, the future is uncertain.
