University of Bolton graduate's ambitious plan to tackle poverty and violence in Jamaica

University of Bolton graduate’s ambitious plan to tackle poverty and violence in Jamaica

By Neil Robertson, reporter

MISSION Kerry Adams

A UNIVERSITY graduate and youth worker flew to Jamaica on Saturday to tackle poverty and violence as part of her new volunteering role.

Kerry Adams, aged 45, from Halliwell, graduated from the University of Bolton in July with a BA honours degree in youth and community.

She is starting her new role with the charity Optimist International after raising more than £1,000 to pay for her flights. She will stay there until the beginning of March.

Miss Adams decided on her trip after she witnessed the “murkier” side of street life Jamaica while on holiday in Kingston last year.

“It was so upsetting seeing what people have to go through every day,” she said. “When I saw what it was like, I felt humbled.

“I felt guilty that I’d moaned about life in England — it makes you realise how lucky we are to live in this country.” Tourists in Jamaica are advised not to leave their complexes or hotels, but Miss Adams wanted to see the country in a different light to what is shown on television.

She said: “Everybody has these preconceived ideas about the Caribbean being complete paradise, but when I ventured out into the streets, I found out that it was not.”

During her stay, Miss Adams will support young people in five schools and deliver formal and informal education in basic maths and English.

She will stay with the youth chairman of Jamaica’s Optimist International Group in Kingston.

This will not be the first time Miss Adams has helped young people tackle the struggles of everyday life.

Before going to university, she was a youth worker for 10 years and says that the issues in Jamaica struck a chord with her based on previous experiences.

Miss Adams, who has received donations from various local businesses, as well as family and friends, is a Spiritual Practitioner at the Kashyapa Buddhist Centre in Silverwell Street, Bolton.

Clarks Shoes in Bolton has also donated a bag of children’s shoes for Miss Adams to take with her.

She said: “Young people need a lot of care and attention. I see a lot of young people in England who have the same issues as those in Jamaica.

“I want to deliver these all-important life skills to young people in Kingston to increase their self-esteem and enhance their life and career prospects.

“Above all else, I want to show people in Jamaica that there is a way out.”

Points to keep in mind before buying branded shoes online

Heading out for a party or conference, your outfit is incomplete without a fine pair of shoes. The best part is that now for buying shoes, you don’t need to visit different local stores. You can buy a classy pair of branded shoes even by relaxing back at your reclining chair!

Everything that you need is just a click away, everything is easily available over the World Wide Web, and shoes are no exception to it. However, before you do online shopping for branded shoes, there are few points to ponder. Read below to know about those points in detail:

There are many online shoe stores that promise quality products. However, the promises of all the e-stores can’t be true. On one hand there are portals that offer genuinely good shoes, and on the other hand there are some simply fake e-stores.

In order to find a reliable online shoe store all you need to do is:

  • Check out the top most e-stores of shoes on any search engine

  • Check clients’ feedback and reviews of couple of top results

  • Thereafter make a decision.

  • Check the size and then add to the cart.

‘There’s tons of little tricks that that go into making the perfect shoe, but I think color, comfort is really important and different sizes of heels.’ – By Jessica Simpson.

Thus, comfort should be the main factor influencing your decision of purchase, and comfort can only be attained through the right size.

Before buying a pair of shoes, check your exact foot size. However, many a times some brands use their own yardstick; thus, buying the right size becomes really hard. In such situations, popular brands provide a scale table from where you can note the suitable fit for your feet.

One of the major reasons behind why people love to buy products online is the availability of various options to select from. Be it Clarks or Adidas, every big shoe brand offers variety in the form of style, size and color, and so does a reliable e-shop for shoes. An ideal online shoe store will have every type of shoe, right from the formal collection to part wear.

In order to crack the best deal, make sure to read the terms and conditions properly. Main elements to consider include delivery time, payment policy and flexibility of return and refund. Before you buy branded shoes, it is important to clearly understand all the terms. Further, in case of any query contact the online shoe store manager either via telephone, mail or live chat.

People generally say that online shopping is not safe; once you a buy a wrong pair it would be an uphill battle to get it replaced. Yes, it’s true that at times online shopping leads to loss of money, efforts and time, but terms and conditions applied. If you will shop from a trusted e-store, your time, efforts and money would not be invested at the right place. Thus whenever you wish to buy a branded pair of shoes online, deem on the above mentioned points and turn you shopping experience into a pleasure activity.

Monk-straps: the shoe of the season?

Monk-strap shoes designed for women are having a moment. Here’s our guide for where to find them – and what to wear them with

If you’ve been in a high street shoe shop lately, you’ll have seen them, but you might not know what they’re called. Monk-strap shoes – typically a flat, plain leather shoe with a single or double strap that buckles to the side – are suddenly everywhere. If the last 12 months were all about slippers, they now have a successor.

Monk-straps have been in the spotlight in menswear for a couple of seasons, but my first encounter with the womenswear take on the trend was a few weeks ago, on the feet of a chic French actress I was interviewing. Hers came from
Church’s

, and looked modern and edgy with a black suit. Then last week, as the Topshop slippers I lived in all summer finally gave up the ghost, I saw the
Russell Bromley Grosvenors

(£175) on a book publicist, who wore them with skinny jeans and loved them so much she was planning to buy them in another colour.

And when I went shopping to replace my flats, it became clear that they are the grey squirrel of the season, edging out slippers and encroaching on territory formerly claimed by brogues and loafers. Since the Grosvenors appeared in Russell Bromley’s autumn/winter ad campaign, they’ve been selling out in some sizes, although they’ll order them in if you ask.

It’s not the first time women have fallen for them. “In the 1950s they were an alternative to the heavy brothel creeper, and girls did wear them, as did goths in the 1980s,” says
Dr Rebecca Arnold, Oak Foundation Lecturer in History of Dress and Textiles at the Courtauld Institute of Art

.

So how do you wear monk-straps now? Skinny jeans or narrow trousers cropped above the ankle work well, as does a sharp knee-length pencil skirt (
as styled by J Crew in their take on the trend

). But not everyone’s falling for them. “I think the buckles are ugly,” says The Telegraph’s own
Kate Finnigan

. “I’m sticking with brogues.”

Being a mod means not having a hair out of place and you’ve got to have that slightly aloof attitude

The spirit of mod brings back an era when good manners and proper behaviour took precedence over everything else.

It is not easy to define the mod look but there are clear definitions as to what mod is not.

“Mods are not into rock, hip hop or black metal, and we don’t like torn jeans,” says Azmeer Idrus, 35, a team building trainer in Malaysia.

The apt description comes from Mohammad Azwan Shah, better known as Wak Doyok. The co-founder of clothing line The Garment simplifies it by offering an antithesis: “The opposite of grunge would be mod.”

“Where grungers are messy, mods are prim,” adds Wak Doyok, 33. “We don’t wear T-shirts unless they are collared. Being a mod means not having a hair out of place and you’ve got to have that slightly aloof attitude,” says Wak Doyok, who was one of the nominees for Esquire magazine’s Best Dressed Real Man.

The spirit of mod brings back the nostalgia of an era when good manners and proper behaviour took precedence over everything else.

“I call it the golden era of fashion because the clean lines bring out the best of a person’s character. These were the kinds of clothes you wore if you wanted to look smart and leave a good impression. In Malay, we say it is ‘not hurtful to the eyes’,” says Wak Doyok.

In his opinion, Malaysian actors Jins Shamsuddin and Sarimah were the local epitomes of mod. The former for his clean-shaven look and sharp suits, the latter for her elegance and heavily kohl-lined eyes.

Mod influence in Malaysia is believed to have originated from young adults who had returned from Britain after following their parents who may have pursued academic degrees or embassy postings. While trying to assimilate themselves into local culture, their style of dressing left an impression on peers.

Among the stories of mod initiations, the most dramatic belongs to Wak Doyok who reveals what sealed his conviction to remain a mod.

Sometime in 1996, he formed a scooter club with three friends. One of them, whom Wak Doyok will only refer to as Alem, met with a fatal accident in 1998.

“When he arrived at the hospital, the police only found three phone numbers on him – all belonging to the members of our scooter club. We were the ones who had to inform his parents,” he says.

When Wak Doyok arrived at the hospital, word had leaked out that Alem was dying. The impact from the accident had ruptured his heart. As the trio were popular figures in Bukit Bintang, a crowd of skinheads, punks and mods had converged at the hospital.

“For once, the hospital grounds resembled the scene of a musician’s gig,” recalls Wak Doyok, then 18. “Alem said to me, ‘In my absence, I want you to continue with the mod movement.’ I took this as his last will to me and gave him my word.”

There are three elements to the making of a mod, offers Wak Doyok and Azmeer.

First of all, there’s the music. Think The Beatles, The Who and jazz greats such as Ella Fitzegerald. According to Azmeer, the rave scene is accredited to the mod movement and the latest offspring to have come out of this is the techno mod, who listens to artistes such as Chemical Brothers.

Then, there’s the scooter and it must be either a Lambretta or a Vespa – no compromises.

Mods are known to go to great lengths to obtain their rides so that they can modify them and show them off at scooter conventions.

Wak Doyok recalls his first Lambretta L13, a 1965 model, while exploring Kuala Kangsar in 1999. He had found the L13 in a decrepit state, buried up to its handle bars in red earth. It took just 130 ringgit (US$41.08) to relieve the relic from its owner, after which Wak Doyok spent a whole day unearthing the scooter.

“There was even a rat’s nest in the engine compartment!” he recalls.

The backbreaking job of freeing the scooter was followed by the arduous task of pushing it to a nearby workshop where Wak Doyok took the engine apart and serviced the carburettor himself. Lo and behold! The LI3 came to life for the first time after 40 years.

Thirdly, it’s the fashion.

The goal was to achieve a classy vintage look. Iconic brands that fit specifications were Ben Sherman, Arnold Palmer, Arrow, Playboy and Penguin, considered as the Pradas and Guccis of the 60s.

For men, shirts had to be slim fit with button-down collars. Suits are to be cut in the Italian style using a three-button-down system with the top button in the same line as the pocket. Suit hems should fall just at the hip line with double vents, one on either side. Interestingly, paisley shirts are also embraced, a remnant of the psychedelic era. In chilly weather, long army coats covered the wearers so they’d look sharp indoors.

Trousers have to be slim cut with drainpipe legs and preferably crinkle-resistant. The only jeans label a mod should allow into his wardrobe is the Levi’s 501s, no other. Footwear of choice are usually loafers embellished with tassels or styled like bowling shoes.

For “modettes” (in reference to females), the essential must-haves are white knee-length boots to match short A-line dresses with geometric designs. The hairstyle to sport is the “Chelsea Cut”, a short but feathery look with long sides and also the wedge bob created by late British hairdresser Vidal Sassoon. And always, heavy eyeliner.

It would be interesting to take a look at, not where a mod shops, but how.

“The Britons have Carnaby Street. In Malaysia, we have the bundle shops in Chow Kit,” smiles Wak Doyok.

For the uninitiated, they should know that there are two kinds of mod.

One sector belongs to the moneyed who can afford to shop overseas and at bona fide boutiques.

Another is from the working class such as the bellboys, office despatchers and supermarket cashiers. Wak Doyok and Azmeer come from the second category. The former used to work as technical assistant at BMW’s old plant in Shah Alam, before working as a public phone technical supervisor whereby he drove a van.

Azmeer started life as a mechanic. “The driving force of mod is in the working class. These are the people who are considered ‘nobodies’ during the day, who become ‘somebodies’ when they step out after work. All because they can carry their own style confidently and have differentiated themselves from the norm,” explains Wak Doyok.

It is this second aspect that has lent an interesting aspect to the shopping style. When the fashion movement saw a local revival during the early 90s, many of the brands which epitomised the spirit of the look were not available for retail. And so, the mods headed to the second-hand shops.

“During the 90s, it was easy to find clothes in the bundle shops because people were still unaware of the vintage clothing market. This worked in our favour because many of us were still schooling. You could get a Ben Sherman shirt for as low as 5 ringgit, or a full suit for 20 ringgit! Can you imagine?” reveals Azmeer.

Looking the part is often a journey of self-discovery.

Nicholas Mak, voted by Cleo readers as this year’s Most Eligible Bachelor – and one of the models in the promotion shoot for The Garment – is an example.

A photographer by profession, the 25-year-old has matured into suits after a period as a rocker. He developed a liking for mod during a two-month holiday in London in 2010.

“For the first time, I wore a suit and discovered the art of layering. My signature look was a long olive green coat and leather gloves,” says Mak who had saved up a sum of 10,000 ringgit for his trip by modelling for television commercials and print ads.

After two months of observing the scene, he built his wardrobe by raiding department stores like Selfridges, Harrods, HM and the boutiques in Kingston. To date, Mak’s collection has grown to the space of three double sliding-cabinets, split in two locations – one at his father’s house in Puchong, Selangor and his bachelor’s pad in Jalan Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur.

Wak Doyok gives an insight into the “wardrobe investment” required for that “well-dressed English gentleman’s look”.

“In 2003, I was spending 500 every month on clothes. My paycheck then was only 1,800, but I’d buy a pair of Classic Clarks for 600. A month later, I’d spend another 300 ringgit on a Topman shirt. The Ben Sherman shirts I have now cost me 350 ringgit a piece. Of course, my mother was livid! To get out of trouble, I’d tell her I got it from the bundle shop, or would keep it aside and not wear it until much later,” laughs Wak Doyok, a bachelor.

But the rule is to always know what you’re looking for.

“From as early as 19, I knew what being fashionable was about. I got my suits tailored and was particular about my shoes matching my belts. I guess it’s in my blood as my father, whom I think looks like Chow Yun-Fat, is also very fashionable. He’d wear things like blue Tod’s loafers,” says Mak.

The mod influence has naturally rubbed off on the local fashion scene – but with a more colourful twist. Think green skinny trousers, chili red suits with polka dot bow ties and double-breasted jackets in purple and pink checks.

The man behind this riot of colour is none other than fashion designer Fairuz Ramdan, who is also a committee member of the Bumiputera Designer’s Association (BDA).

Making use of mod elements landed Fairuz an order from Parkson after a successful showing at the Mercedes Benz Stylo Fashion Week this March.

“I came in at the right time when the concept of the smartly-dressed gentleman was making headway locally. This was when big brands like HM and Uniqlo were coming in with cutting-edge men’s fashion,” says Fairuz.

The eldest son of four siblings, Fairuz spent half his childhood in Scotland where his late father pursued his academic research.

“Most of my clients are not into mod but are people who want to look good,” says Fairuz.

But having cut his teeth as a vendor selling vintage clothing, he has met die-hard mod followers who didn’t just see the movement as a trend.

“To them, being mod was how you lived,” concludes Fairuz.

Clarks Womens Casylynn Lizzie Wedge Sandal 4 175x300 Clarks Womens Casylynn Lizzie Wedge Sandal 4

They’ve been waiting patiently for you in stores since earlier this summer: reptilian accessories, slouchy trousers, rugged tweeds and flannels. And now that we’ve finally felt the first chill, admit it: You’re kind of excited to bust out the cool-weather clothes. Luckily, a bunch of this fall’s hot styles are made for a city like Chicago, from wax jackets for guys to battle biting winds to over-the-knee lady boots for supreme thigh coverage and warmth. And if your bank account is struggling, rest easy: Half of these “new looks” are already in your closet. Let’s all say it together: Look good, stay warm, repeat.

FOR THE LADIES

Trends worth your cash:

Jewel tones
Store away the acidic neons you wore to Lolla; the next five months are about super-rich hues like cobalt blue and emerald green. “Bright jewel tones look good on everyone, whether you’re a pale redhead or tan brunette,” said stylist Heidy Best, owner of fashion consulting firm Be Clothes Minded. Extra points if you can find these shades in fun textures or prints.

Snakeskin
Gucci sent a pair of sleek python boots down the runway at their fall show, and since then, pretty much every retailer has gone nuts for lizard skin. Go for accents (belts, booties, ballet flats, a clutch) and unexpected colors such as fuchsia. “Even if you’re a plain Jane, a little snakeskin print goes a long way in pulling a look together. It’s a subtle way to break out of your shell,” said Best.

Trousers
Since skinny jeans have reigned for like, 100 years at this point, your legs might be confused by the surplus of circulation, but give the slouchy pant a chance. “It’s a chic look and it’s easy to transition from office to night. Plus they’re comfortable— it’s like wearing pajamas,” said Ashley Zisook, owner of Gold Coast boutique Sofia. Whether they’re drawstring, high-waisted or low-riders, pair trousers with a fitted top or tucked in T-shirt.

Ankle boots
To get the most bang for your buck, go combat: “Buy these now and they’ll carry you through next summer,” said Zisook. The more lady-like ankle grazers have fun studded details, cut-outs, or chunky soles, and if you’re feeling super-frisky, the supremely impractical cage bootie is hella hot. (Just skip it on a snow day.)

Statement coats

From extreme fur to oversized parkas and look-at-me prints, if you buy one thing this season, make it a bold jacket. You can throw it on over a holey high-school track shirt and no one will be the wiser. If you find a beauty that isn’t warm enough, here’s a tip: “I always layer my jackets,” said Zisook. “I just put a coat over my leather jacket when it gets colder outside.”

Shop your closet for:

Peplum
Waist ruffles are officially the Freddy Krueger of fashion: They just won’t die. Which is actually great, because let’s be serious: “It’s so flattering,” said Best. “Wear a peplum top and you can have that extra appetizer and no one will notice.” It scores major points for versatility, too: A peplum top with a skirt looks like a dress, or you can put on trousers for cocktails and then pair with jeans for the weekend.

Fur
Faux, vintage, shaggy or sleek, the beastly vest you bought a few years back is still good. Tack on an animal print belt to give it an update, or wear it over a fitted dress for going out. If you want to throw a little cash into something new, get creative: “Pony hair on cuffs and clutches looks really sharp,” said Zisook.

Over-the-knee boots
Thigh-grazing leather has circled back, but just wait until it’s actually freezing to bring these bad boys out. They’ll look best paired with a flowy skirt or leggings and boyfriend blazer; skip the butt-hugging skirts or risk veering into streetwalker territory.

Classic menswear prints
Designers went back to the basics with herringbone-, houndstooth-, and glen plaid-covered trenches, skirts and pants on the runway. To avoid looking like Sherlock Holmes, “find classic prints that have modern shapes,” said Kelly Golden, who styles a number of Chicago clients in addition to owning Winnetka boutique Neapolitan Collection. “You can even mix patterns if the colors are complimentary.”

Pink
It sounds strange, but pastels are big for fall. “Soft rose pink is like the new winter white,” said Golden. “it used to only be for summer, but now women are wearing it past Labor Day.” Dig a knee-grazing skirt or boxy top out of your closet and pair it with neutral shades such as camel, black or even rust to make it feel right for the season.

FOR THE GUYS

Trends worth your cash:

Motorcycle jackets
“This is a look that worked for women in years past and now guys are starting to adopt it,” said Michael Barkin, director of sales at Chicago-based men’s clothing service Trunk Club. Find a soft, buttery hide that’s lean and slightly lived-in, and doesn’t have a ton of detail or embellishment. Need more convincing? See: Theroux, Justin.

Burgundy
Wine, maroon, oxblood—whatever you want to call this deep hue— it works from now right through Christmas dinner. The high-fashion folks are doing it monochrome, but for everyone else, burgundy works well paired with the other neutrals in your wardrobe, like navy, black and tan.

Tweed
“Guys are getting comfortable wearing big texture looks like tweed,” said Barkin, and the modern offerings are soft and not scratchy. Anyone can pull off a tweed sport coat; just pair it with contemporary accessories such as a knit tie to avoid looking like you just walked out of a college lecture.

Camo
Good things come in small doses, and this couldn’t be truer for camo, which is making a brief appearance this fall. Find a jacket or pants at the thrift store and pair it with non-reservist items, like a white button-down and cashmere sweater.

Statement scarves
Dibs on this trend: We Chicagoans have been swaddling our necks in massive pieces of fabric for decades. “Big scarves are functional; you have to have them in a city like Chicago,” said Barkin. Wear a chunky piece of neckwear tied in a tight knot or just wrap it loosely over your shoulders, and don’t shy away from fun colors and patterns.

Shop your closet for:

Flannel
The fashion world is taking cues from Kurt Cobain again this season, with designers such as Saint Laurent going gaga for grunge. “Plaids larger than two inches tend to be more casual, so wear them untucked with a stiff pair of denim or heavy cotton pants or cords,” said Barkin.

Hunting-inspired pieces
“Macintosh raincoats and quilted styles are trendy and guys can wear them for a long time,” said Grace Marsh, drector of brand communications at Haberdash, which has stores in River North and one coming soon in the South Loop. Have a Barbour wax jacket already? Start wearing it in urban settings and you’ll look like a refined outdoorsman.

Suede shoes
So they’re not for splashing around in the rain, but if you invested in a pair of summer suede shoes, stay armed with them for autumn, said Marsh. “It’s really nice twist on the classic oxford.” If you go new, look for wingtips and a chunkier heel or even a pair of chukka boots.

Grandpa-style
If you have access to your grandpa’s closet, dig around for button-up cashmeres, chunky sweaters and big checks, said Barkin. “Some of the old school Americana brands that were popular with our grandparents are popular now.” There’s a good chance the fabric on their old threads is superior to the stuff in stores now, too.

Corduroy pants
Before you settle into your regular rotation of jeans for the season, yank out a few pairs of cords from the back of your drawer. (The new look is a slim cut, so if they’re baggy, take them to the tailor and have ‘em tightened up.) No need to limit yourself to camel; colors such as forest green and saffron are big for fall.

Neiman Marcus among stores coming to revamped Riverwalk

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The makeover of the old Riverwalk Mall has attracted huge national retailers as tenants. It is another indication that confidence in the city’s economy is growing.

The Howard Hughes Corporation announced Monday a long list of big-name tenants for the mall as part of the $70 million redevelopment project.

Stretched along the riverfront for decades, the Riverwalk has long been a part of the city’s fabric. The revamped retail center will be called “The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk.”

“We think it’s going to be a nice catalyst for the rebirth of retail in the city of New Orleans, not just downtown, but across the city,” said Mark Bulmash, Sr. Vice President of Development for the Howard Hughes Corporation.

The interior of the once-struggling retail center has been gutted, and plans for the new space have enticed national retailers, including some that have never operated in Louisiana. Among them, Neiman Marcus’ Last Call Studio. It will be the first Neiman Marcus store in the state. Coach’s Men’s Factory Store, Tommy Bahama, Kenneth Cole Company Store, Loft Outlet, Chico’s Outlet, Gap Outlet, Clarks/Bostonian Outlet, Hartstrings Children’s Wear, U.S. Polo Association Outlet, New Balance Factory Shoes, and Sunglass Warehouse are among dozens of other tenants.

Many local restaurants like Café du Monde and Raising Cane’s are among the new eateries that will be a part of the Riverwalk.

“We think it’s a really compelling retail mix [and] that there will be a little something for everybody,” Bulmash said.

As part of the redevelopment, 50,000 square feet will be added, for a total of 250,000 square feet of retail space next to the Hilton Riverside Hotel. Almost all of the space is rented, with 94 percent of the leases executed, according to the Howard Hughes Corporation.

The Downtown Development District is thrilled.

“It’s a tremendous benefit to downtown and to the city, because recent studies have shown $1.9 billion of retail sales have seeped out of this city because we didn’t have a place for people to shop,” said Anthony Carter, Director of Finance and Administration for the DDD.

But instilling confidence in national retailers to be part of the redevelopment of the Riverwalk didn’t happen overnight.

“We’re seeing a lot better response to our inquiries with tenants now than we did two-and-half years ago when we first tried to get them interested in New Orleans and the opportunity,” Bulmash said. “Back then it really was an issue. The question that kept being asked of us was, why New Orleans? They really hadn’t thought about the city since Katrina.”

It was a turnaround in perception about the city that the DDD was confident would come.

“We’re showing there is vibrant life downtown, and national retailers are paying attention to that,” said Carter.

Bulmash expects the project to create about 700 construction jobs and the same amount of retail jobs, although not all of them will be full time.

Sales taxes from the Riverwalk once it reopens by the summer of 2014 are estimated to be $6.9 million annually.

The Howard Hughes Corporation® Announces Tenants for the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk

DALLAS NEW ORLEANS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

The

Howard Hughes Corporation
(HHC) announced today its all-star

lineup of tenants for the redevelopment of the Riverwalk Marketplace

into The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk. Along with being the nation’s

first outlet center located in a downtown setting, the project will be

the first location in New Orleans, Louisiana and the Gulf region for

many of the Riverwalk’s retailers.

“These exceptional retailers will create an unmatched shopping

experience at The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk,” said Mark Bulmash,

Senior Vice President of Development for The Howard Hughes Corporation.

“Our team has been working side-by-side with the City of New Orleans to

ensure that we exceed the expectations of local shoppers while

continuing to drive tourists and revenue to the Downtown area.”

Virtually all of the space at The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk is

committed with 94 percent of leases executed by well-known national

outlet retailers along with popular local retail, dining and

entertainment offerings. New-to-the-market retailers and restaurants

signed-on to date include: Last Call Studio by Neiman Marcus, Coach

Men’s Factory Store, Tommy Bahama, Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar Grill,

Hartstrings Childrenswear, U.S. Polo Assn. Outlet, It’Sugar, Sunglass

Warehouse, Red Mango and New Balance Factory Stores.

Additional Riverwalk tenants include notable brands such as Coach

Factory Store, Café du Monde, Kenneth Cole Company Store, LOFT Outlet,

Chico’s Outlet, Clarks/Bostonian Outlet, Gap Outlet, Guess Factory

Store, Kay Jewelers, Raising Cane’s, Sunglass Hut Outlet and The

Fudgery. The full list of tenants can be viewed at www.outletcollectionatriverwalk.com.

“We are very excited to open a Neiman Marcus Last Call Studio with The

Howard Hughes Corporation at The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk in New

Orleans,” said Wayne Hussey, Senior Vice President of Store Development

for the Neiman Marcus Group. “This will be the first Neiman Marcus store

in Louisiana and our first venture with Howard Hughes. We already have a

strong customer base in Louisiana and are pleased to become part of the

continued resurgence in the great City of New Orleans.”

A market that has long been under-served in the retail sector, New

Orleans has approximately 30% less square feet of retail per capita than

the national average. City leadership has made it a priority to bring

more retail to New Orleans.

“We are in the midst of a retail boom in New Orleans, and the

redevelopment of the Riverwalk is a welcome addition,” said Mayor Mitch

Landrieu. “We’re seeing a lot of projects come to fruition that will

ultimately make the city a better place to live and visit. This project

will transform a site that’s been underused, bring much needed retail

downtown and create new jobs and local tax dollars. These nationally

recognized retailers will increase New Orleans’ attraction as a premier

shopping destination.”

The redevelopment will expand its footprint by about 50,000 square feet

to an approximate total of 250,000 square feet. Interior demolition and

other construction activities are underway. The property plans to reopen

in late spring/early summer of 2014.

The Howard Hughes Corporation® Announces Tenants for the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk

Fashion forward
